CATL finds two new customers for its Shenxing batteries

Two more Chinese electric car manufacturers are relying on CATL's particularly fast-charging new LFP battery Shenxing. After Neta and Avatr, Chery and BAIC BJEV also announced their use. In the case of Chery, cars with this battery will also be sold in Europe.

Chery initially wants to install the battery in e-cars of its Exeed brand. However, the Exeed electric cars (and also those of Luxeed, a joint venture between Chery and Huawei) are so far planned primarily for sale in China. Chery models equipped with Shenxing batteries will also be offered outside China, specifically in Europe, Asia and North America, according to Chinese eMobility portals.

Only in September, Chery announced that it would launch its three brands Omoda, Jaecoo and Exlantix in Europe in 2024 – although only Exlantix is a purely electric brand. But the two models announced are expected to be based on the Exeed versions, so the E0Y SUV and E03 sedan are the most likely candidates for CATL’s fast-charging LFP battery.

BAIC BJEV plans to use the Shenxing batteries in electric cars under its Arcfox brand. Arcfox has been selling electric cars in China since 2020, and so far the brand is not said to have any expansion plans. Recently, however, there have been rumours that Arcfox electric cars could also be built at the Hyundai-BAIC joint venture plant in the future in order to increase capacity utilisation.

CATL had presented the Shenxing battery in mid-August and will also manufacture it in its European plants in Germany and Hungary in the future after the start of production in China at the end of 2023. Since Chery currently does not have its own vehicle production in Europe, the e-cars with Shenxing batteries sold in Europe are likely to be battery cells from China that are imported to Europe together with the cars. Customers for the Shenxing battery from the European CATL plants are not yet known.

The special feature is that this LFP battery can be charged with up to 4C – the charging power (in kW) is four times the battery size (in kWh). Theoretically, a full charge is possible in 15 minutes. CATL stated at the time that electricity for 400 kilometres could be recharged in ten minutes.
