Irish Post deploys 45 VW ID. Buzz Cargo

That makes An Post the largest EV fleet operator in Ireland. Of the company's current 3,600 vehicles, around 1,000 are electric.

Already in 2019, An Post decided to procure the first 750 electric transporters by 2022. By November 2023, over 250 more EVs had been added, and the fleet continues to grow. An Post plans to increase the number of electric vehicles to 1,250 by the first quarter of 2024. By 2025, every second delivery van is to be purely electric.

According to An Post, 30 per cent of all delivery routes are currently served by electric vehicles. With the additional vehicles in the run-up, the quota is set to rise to 32 per cent in Q1 2024. The ID. Buzz Cargo will be used in the upcoming Christmas season when the company expects more than 100,000 parcel deliveries per day – which also explains the disguised Santa Claus in the press photos.

The ID. Buzz Cargo offers up to 3.9 cubic meters of cargo space, and a maximum of 2.20 meters of long items can be loaded – although the Irish postal service is likely to have opted for a shelving system. Up to two Euro pallets can be loaded without interior fittings. With a maximum payload of 647 kilograms, the ID. Buzz Cargo is at the lower end of the van segment.

David McRedmond, Managing Director of An Post, told Irish media that the launch of the new ID. Buzz fleet demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to a sustainable future for all. “We’re excited about the positive impact it will have on our environment and the communities and customers we serve as we continue to reduce our carbon footprint and improve the quality of life in Ireland, now and for generations to come,” the CEO said.
