Paralympic Games Paris to launch converted hydrogen buses with Toyota fuel cell modules

A fleet of converted hydrogen buses will be employed at the upcoming Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024. The ten used and formerly-diesel buses from Iveco will ferry an estimated 5,000 visitors, once they have been retrofitted with fuel cell technology from Toyota.

Ten used diesel coaches from Iveco, retrofitted with fuel cell technology from Toyota, will transport more than 5,000 visitors to the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. After the competitions, these hydrogen coaches will be handed over to public and private customers to travel emission-free on the Ile de France in the heart of Paris over the full usage cycle.

Toyota is supplying GCK, a group of industrial companies providing technological solutions to decarbonise transport, with fuel cell modules to transform ten used Iveco coaches into locally emission-free vehicles. These will be taken over by B.E. Green, a French company specialising in CO2-neutral transport services, to be integrated into its existing fleet of vehicles after the Games. The first converted coach with the Toyota fuel cell module has just been unveiled. The conversion replaces the diesel engine and transmission in the front of the bus with a 370 kW electric motor, batteries and the Toyota fuel cell module TFCM2-B

“The conversion of coaches into fuel cell electric vehicles is another important step towards achieving carbon neutrality in the transport sector. This co-operation perfectly illustrates how hydrogen applications benefit all business stakeholders and become long-term solutions,” said Thiebault Paquet, Vice President Toyota Motor Europe, Hydrogen Factory, adding: “All ten fuel cell coaches will allow Toyota to transport guests during Paris 2024 with zero tailpipe emissions. We’d like to thank our partners for their combined efforts – being pioneers and accelerators of the hydrogen society, while making this possible in time for the Games.”+
