Electreon to test inductive charging with an Iveco Daily

The Israeli company Electreon, which specializes in inductive charging systems for electric vehicles, has announced a project in Sweden in which wireless charging will be tested for two years in real operation with a small truck converted to an electric drive, but not while in motion.

To date, Electreon has primarily driven forward projects for dynamic, inductive charging, in which vehicles are supplied with electricity while driving – via coils that are embedded in the road surface. One example is the ‘Smartroad Gotland‘, also in Sweden.

The project starting in spring 2024 will be different: an Iveco Daily will be used, which will be converted to an electric drive by Swedish specialist REARQ and equipped with Electreon technology. The vehicle will then be charged inductively both at loading ramps and at night in the Stockholm depot. The vehicle will be used by the transport company BDX Företagen, which transports goods for the distribution company Ahlsell Sverige.

Technical data on the drive of the converted Iveco Daily is not mentioned (with one exception). Electreon also does not reveal the charging capacity of the inductive system in the project announcement.

Simple recharging at the loading ramps should enable a battery concept with lower costs and resource requirements: The retrofitted electric light truck will manage a full day’s schedule with a relatively small 35 kWh battery – even in the low winter temperatures around Stockholm. The morning deliveries will cover around 50 kilometres. The driver then returns to the distribution centre to recharge and continues the afternoon operation.

The charging process should start automatically as soon as the vehicle has reversed up to the loading ramp. “This project introduces Electreon’s technology for a new segment in the market,” says Maher Kasskawo, Business Development Manager for Electreon in the Nordics. “This will enhance vehicle operational efficiency and create a clutter and cable-free environment for the drivers and the workforce at the distribution center.”
