Ampere to build compact SUV for Mitsubishi

Ampere, the Renault Group's new EV division, will produce a compact electric SUV for alliance partner Mitsubishi at the Douai plant in France. So far, only the platform of the new model and the planned market launch in 2025 have been confirmed, leaving many other points open.

The little information known comes from Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault and Ampere. The Mitsubishi electric vehicle will therefore use the Group’s CMF-EV platform for compact vehicles, which will be called AmpR Medium from now on. “I can confirm that Mitsubishi will produce a C-SUV EV for the world on the AmpR Medium platform, of course in Douai, and of course all electric,” said de Meo. Mitsubishi’s compact electric SUV is set to be launched in 2025, with more details to be announced in 2024, according to a Mitsubishi Motors Europe spokesperson.

It is therefore still unclear whether it will be a body designed by Mitsubishi or a Renault model branded by the Japanese company. The Mitsubishi ASX, which will also be available as a plug-in hybrid, merely swapped the brand logos and lettering for the Renault Captur. Renault is currently building the Mégane E-Tech Electric compact model based on the AmpR Medium and will launch a crossover with the well-known model name Scénic in 2024.

In March, Mitsubishi announced four all-electric models by 2028, including a pickup truck, an SUV and two models as part of the manufacturer alliance with Renault and Nissan. Mitsubishi will invest a maximum of 200 million euros in Renault’s electric car division Ampere.

Among the electric Mitsubishis announced as recently as March was a covered small electric car known as the Colt. The model was to be based on the AmpR Small (previously CMF-BEV) of the Renault 5 and the successor to the Nissan Micra. In the meantime, a new Mitsubishi Colt is already on the market – a Renault Clio restyled in the spirit of badge engineering. As the CMF-B of the Clio and the CMF-BEV/AmpR Small share many components, it is still possible that an electric Mitsubishi Colt will also come onto the market.
